Flavonoids (Citrus) - are plant-based compounds with a wide range of antioxidant properties: they reduce inflammation, promote healthy arteries and help prevent premature aging by repairing cellular damage. Flavonoids were referred to as Vitamin P (probably because of the effect they had on the permeability of vascular capillaries) from the mid-1930s to early 50s.Current research suggests that flavonoids offer extra protection against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Physiological processing of flavonoid compounds induces so-called Phase II enzymes that also help to eliminate mutagens and carcinogens, and therefore may be of value in cancer prevention. Flavonoids could also induce mechanisms that may kill cancer cells and inhibit tumor invasion. Citric flavonoids are known to boost vitamin C absorption into the tissues and strengthen blood vessels walls.
